Jewish Ghetto

Jewish Ghetto of Rome was established in 1555 in the Rione di Sant Angelo in Rome. The Jewish Ghetto of Rome was Established because of the results of the Papal Bull Cum Nimis Absurdum which was proclaimed by Pope Paul the 4th on the 14th of July 1555.

Remember that the Jews had lived in Rome before the Christians and at this time where about 2000 that were sent to live in the Ghetto. The ghetto itself was a Walled area with three large gates that where always locked at night . The actual wall was built by the architect Giovanni Sallustio Peruzzi and was also paid by the Jewish community.

At the time the area that was chosen to place the Jews was not the best part of Rome as it was subject to constant flooding from the river Tiber , the actual Jewish community somewhere happy about them being established in the Ghetto quarters they felt safer from any external attack others though felt it was part of a restriction of their liberty. Now days you can feel the strong Jewish community in Rome and even due to the events of the Past in Rome the Community has continued to grow unlike many other parts of Europe where the Jewish community no longer exists. The Jewish Ghetto is part of the past and like the persecutions of the Christians the past has left us much to look at and learn from the errors inflicted in the name of religion due to their religion and Beliefs.
